Today, the Friends of the Rappahannock gave BCV the gift of 100s of small grasses which they donated and planted on the newly restored berm by the marina. What started as a rumor that there are groups who might help restore our grasses, led to a phone call to a Virginia wetlands office and a connection to the Friends of the Rappahannock (www.riverfriends.org). This wonderful organization was happy to partner with us to provide the plants and labor to enhance our environment and maintain and improve the quality of the river around us. This should shore up the sand through the roots of the grasses to prevent erosion and run off.
This morning seven individuals came from as far as Culpepper to plant the grasses. It was a beautiful, relatively cool morning, and they got them all planted before predicted afternoon storms. They planted three types of native grasses the same or close to what we already have and followed the plan laid out in the permit for the riprap work. Please be gentle walking around them. If you see one that needs to be tamped down or replanted, please help it along so that we can ensure as many of the plants to take root as possible. The Board will be donating $100 to the work of the organization.
The mission of the group is “to be the voice and active force for a healthy and scenic Rappahannock River.” They do great work and have some excellent programs. You can sign up for their newsletter at www.riverfriends.org. Thanks to The Friends of the Rappahannock for getting this done for us.
